I've never had elastics on my pointe shoes before, just because I've always been fine with just the ribbons. But now my teacher has old me that I should put them on. Where do they generally go in relation to the ribbons? Anything else I should know before I sew them on? Thanks.
It depends a lot on your comfort and how your foot functions. People with a very high, strong arch (if your heels pop out of the shoes easily) generally like to have their elastics come from behind the ribbons (near the back seam, but leave enough room for your foot to enter the shoe), and cross over the arch. You can have a criss-cross set of elastics, or one elastic looping around your arch. I do not recommend having a loop at the heel, as it tends to interfere with the Achilles tendon. As with ribbons, sew them in as deep as possible, so as to give yourself as much support as you can. However, if you have not felt the need for elastic before, you might ask your teacher why she thinks you need the elastic. Usually the less you have to do to your shoes, the better.

Posted on 2007-01-15 05:29:11some dancers need elastic to keep their heels from popping out of their shoes. other dancers' shoes stay on without the extra help. if your shoes stay on without elastic, there probably isn't any reason to add them. you should ask your teacher why she thinks you now need them. good luck
